Jaipur is now one of the most visited tourism destinations in northern India. Known for centuries as a

History of Jaipur

As per the historic documents, The modern city of Jaipur was founded back in 1727 by Jai Singh II King of Amer who ruled this region from 1688 to 1743. Initially, the capital of Amer was Dausa, which lies about 51 km away from Jaipur. Later, Jaipur city was constructed under the guidance of the famous architect, Vidyadhar Bhattacharya, following the classical construction principles of Bharatiya Vastu Shastra.

Construction of the modern city of Jaipur was started in 1727 and it took almost 5 years to complete the major forts, stone paved roads, and the central square. Formation of this city was made in nine blocks, with two containing palaces and administrative buildings and the rest of the seven blocks for public occupancy. Jaipur had a rapid growth in the 19th century, when it had a population of about 1,60,000. Over the next several decades, Jaipur had grown into the form a modern city, serving now as the state capital and being a major business, tourist and cultural center.

Geography and Climate

Jaipur is known to have balanced climatic conditions, which makes it an ideal place for the tourists. The city comes under the Köppen climate classification and gets about 650 mm of rainfall yearly. The major monsoon season here is in between June to September. Generally, temperatures in Rajasthan remains a bit high throughout the year as it is a desert state basically, and this setting is more or less the same in Jaipur too. From April to the first part of July, which are the summer months here, the temperature varies between 25 to 33 degrees Centigrade.

Heavy and continuos rainfall can be expected during the monsoon period and thunderstorms may also occur. However, flooding is not so common in this region. Winter seasons is from November to February during when the Jaipur weather remains very pleasant and soothing. The average temperature during winter months ranges from 15 to 18 degree Centigrade with very less humidity. However, cold waves also occur some days and the temperatures may go down to freezing.


Getting bored at Jaipur is simply out of question as there are plenty of things to do in Jaipur for tourists as well as art and culture enthusiasts. Conde Nast Traveller Readers Choice Survey once ranked Jaipur as the 7th best place to be visited in Asia. For tourists, the major attractions in and around Jaipur city are the Hawa Mahal, Jaipur Zoo, City Palace, Jal Mahal, Jantar Mantar, Amer Fort, Jaigarh Fort, Nahargarh Fort, Birla Mandir, Sri Kali Temple, and the Sanganeri Gate etc.

Known for its rich culture and centuries long history and heritage, there are many cultural and arts centers too in the city as Jawahar Kala Kendra, Ravindra Manch, Albert Hall Museum, and Viratnagar Art Gallery etc. The Town Hall, which was the Vidhan Sabha Bhawan at olden times, is now being converted into a cultural center and museum. Jaipur is also an ideal destination for shopping freaks. There are plenty of jewelry, antique, handicrafts, gems, carpets, leatherwork, textile shops across all the streets of Jaipur.
